About Trailbound
Independent outdoor gear coverage, written for people who are actually going outside.
Trailbound publishes gear guidance for hiking, camping, trail running, cycling, paddling, climbing, and winter sports. We started in 2021 because most gear writing forces readers to choose between a press release and an unreadable wall of specification tables. Neither tells you whether a piece of kit will work on your trip.
What we cover, and why
We write about gear that a normal person can buy and use: boots and trail shoes, packs, shelters, sleep systems, stoves, lighting, bike and paddle accessories, and the safety kit that gets forgotten. We skip anything we cannot say something useful about.
How we decide what to recommend
- Published specifications first. Weight, volume, dimensions, materials, and standards come from the manufacturer's own documentation. Where a specification is stated by the maker, we say so.
- Reported field use second. When a conclusion rests on how gear behaves over many trips — durability, comfort over distance, long-term waterproofing — we label it as reported experience, not as a measurement we performed.
- No invented numbers. We do not publish star ratings, test scores, "best of" rankings, or percentages we cannot substantiate.
- No paid placements. Brands cannot buy a recommendation, a position in a list, or a favourable summary. Sponsorship does not exist on this site.
- Tradeoffs stated plainly. Every piece of outdoor gear is a compromise. If we recommend something, we tell you what you give up.
Prices and availability
Prices change constantly and vary by region, so we do not print them. Where you see a price reference, it links to a live listing. Anything we cannot keep accurate, we do not state.
Safety
Outdoor activities carry real risk. Our articles are general guidance, not instruction for a specific route, condition, or person, and they do not replace training, local advice, or your own judgement. Avalanche, water, climbing, and navigation decisions require skills this site cannot provide.

Who writes this
Articles are written and edited by the Trailbound editorial team. Bylines name the author where a piece depends on one person's specific experience. We do not publish content under invented personas.
