Anchor building is one of the few climbing skills where a mistake can be immediately fatal, and it is also one of the most often learned informally. Everything below is background for understanding, not a substitute for instruction on real rock.
The principles, and why they exist
Redundancy. A single point of failure is the thing anchors are designed to avoid. Every component in the chain — pieces, slings, carabiners, the master point — should have a backup, so that any one failing does not cause the system to fail.
Load sharing. Each piece should take a reasonable share of the load rather than one taking everything. A well-equalised anchor distributes force across multiple placements.
No extension. If a component fails, the system should not suddenly extend and shock-load what remains. That is why anchor construction is not just about strength but about geometry.
Small angles. This is where the arithmetic surprises people. As the angle between two legs widens, the tension in each leg rises steeply. Two legs at zero degrees each carry roughly half the load; as the angle widens past about 120 degrees, each leg carries more than the total load itself. This is why anchors are built with the legs close together and why wide, flat V-shapes are avoided.
Adequate pieces. Each piece should be independently capable of holding a substantial load, correctly placed in sound rock. Judging placement quality takes experience and instruction: rock type, orientation, surface area, flaring cracks and outward force all matter.
Equalising: static versus dynamic
Because the direction of pull changes constantly — a belayer moves, a second climbs to the side, a rappel shifts — an anchor built for one direction may become poorly loaded when that direction changes.
Two broad approaches exist:
- A method that adjusts as the load direction changes, so the load redistributes. This tends to involve more rope or cord and can be bulkier.
- A method that is fixed for a known direction, which is simpler and neater but assumes the direction does not change much.
Neither is universally right. The choice depends on what the anchor is for.
Where instruction matters
Articles and videos can explain the principles above. What they cannot do is teach you to judge:
- Whether a crack placement is sound in the rock in front of you.
- How a change in terrain changes the direction of load.
- What to do when the only available pieces are mediocre.
- Whether the anchor you have built is actually adequate for what comes next.
Those are learned with a qualified instructor, on real rock, with time to practise, and then reinforced with experienced partners.
The honest position
Anchors are not a place for optimism. If you are not confident in what you have built, the right answer is to back it up, change the plan, or retreat — in that order of preference.
Take a course. Climb with people who know more than you do, and ask them to explain their reasoning rather than just their setup. That is how this skill is actually acquired.
