Down is the lightest and warmest for its bulk but loses most of its insulating value when wet, so it works best in dry cold or as a dry layer at a stop.

Look at two things in a shell. Ventilation — pit zips or large pocket openings that let you dump heat without taking the jacket off. And closure — a hood that stays up in wind, cuffs that seal, and a hem you can cinch. A shell you can open while moving is worth more than one with a slightly better fabric.

Boots should have room for your toes to move and for a thicker sock without compressing it. A tight boot restricts circulation, and a restricted foot gets cold regardless of how good the insulation is. On deep snow, gaiters keep snow out of the boot top, which matters more than most people expect.
