Winter traction equipment answers two different questions, and choosing the wrong tool for the question is the usual mistake.

Flotation: how do I stop sinking? Traction: how do I stop sliding? Deeper snow is a flotation problem; hard, icy surfaces are a traction problem. Many winter routes pose both, at different points on the same day.

The three categories

Microspikes and walking traction. Short spikes on a flexible rubber or elastomer harness, worn over ordinary boots. They are the workhorse of winter walking: packed trails, icy lanes, hard crusts, forest roads.

Their limits matter. They are for walking, on relatively low-angle ground. They are not for steep snow, they do not front-point, and they can roll off a boot if the fit is poor or the surface is uneven.

Snowshoes. These spread your weight to keep you on the surface rather than in it. They come with their own traction — usually a set of teeth under the binding and crampons under the ball of the foot — which makes them work on a range of surfaces.

Sizes and designs vary by weight carried and terrain. A snowshoe for flat touring is a different shape from one for steep, rolling terrain: the latter usually has more aggressive traction and a heel-lift bar that saves your calves on climbs.

Mountaineering crampons. Long, sharp points on a rigid or semi-rigid frame with a proper binding system, for steep snow and ice. These are not an upgrade of microspikes; they are a different tool for a different environment, and they require training — footwork technique on steep ground is a skill, and so is combining them with an ice axe.

Choosing for the day

A practical approach:

  • Hardpacked trail, icy patches, gentle gradients. Microspikes.
  • Deep unconsolidated or drifted snow, forest and meadow terrain. Snowshoes.
  • A route with both. Carry both, or pick a route with one kind of surface.
  • Steep snow or glacier travel. Crampons, an axe where appropriate, and the training and partners for it.

Route reports and forecast discussions tell you what the surface is actually like. A trail that was firm and fast after a freeze can be soft and unsupportable by the afternoon, so check conditions for the day you are going.

Fit and carrying

Fit is where these devices actually fail. Check the sizing against your boot sole length, not just the nominal shoe size, and test the harness over the boots you will wear — including with thick socks.

Habits that help:

  • Recheck the harness after the first kilometre; new straps settle.
  • Gaiters over the harness keep it seated and keep snow out of your boots.
  • Carry them properly. Spikes in a bag, points away from fabric, and not loose in a pack where they can puncture a hydration bladder or a jacket.
  • Practise putting them on with cold hands, ideally before the day you need to.

Where the risk lives

The dangerous transition is the one people skip: going from a gentle trail to steeper ground while still wearing walking traction.

If the angle increases and the surface gets harder, either stop and switch to proper equipment and technique, or turn around. Microspikes on steep icy ground are one of the common threads in winter accident reports, and the correction is usually a decision, not a purchase.
