Winter Trail Conditions: Ice, Crust and Post-holing

Read the surface

Snow is a material with states, and the state decides how the day goes.

Powder and unconsolidated snow. Deep and soft. Travel is slow, and you will want flotation — snowshoes or skis — or you will spend the day sinking.

A supportable crust. A hard layer that holds your weight. Fast and pleasant if it is strong enough; miserable if it is not. Crusts form and break down with temperature and sun, which is why afternoon conditions differ from morning.

Breakable crust. The worst of both: it holds just long enough to raise you up, then fails. Post-holing through breakable crust is genuinely exhausting and a common reason trips end early.

Ice and boilerplate. Hard, smooth and often invisible under a thin layer of snow. This is where traction matters and where a fall on a slope becomes consequential.

Wind slab and drifted snow. Wind moves snow onto lee slopes and forms slabs. This is both a travel problem and, in the mountains, an avalanche concern.

Why yesterday’s trail may be worse today

A track broken through deep snow can set overnight into a firm, fast route — or soften in the sun into a slushy mess that is harder than fresh snow.

Temperature is the key variable. Snow that is firm and quick in the early morning can become wet and unsupportable by early afternoon. That daily cycle is why winter trips start early and finish early.

Daylight and time

Winter gives you far fewer usable hours, and snow generally slows travel by a substantial margin. Plan the day accordingly:

  • Assume you will travel significantly slower than in summer.
  • Set a turnaround time based on when you need to be back at the trailhead, not on reaching the objective.
  • Carry a headlamp even on a short trip, and spare batteries kept warm.
  • Tell someone your route and expected return.

The most common cause of winter incidents is not equipment failure. It is being out later than planned in the cold and the dark.

What to carry

Beyond the usual essentials: traction devices for the expected surface, a spare insulating layer, extra food and a hot drink in a flask, a headlamp with warm spare batteries, a map and compass plus a recorded GPS track, and a bothy bag or emergency shelter for an unplanned stop.

The margin is the point

Winter rewards conservative decisions. Turn around early, choose the lower objective, and check the forecast and recent trail reports before you go.
