Anchors attract more armchair argument than any other part of climbing, and most of the argument misses the point: the placements decide whether the anchor is good, and the rigging decides how convenient it is.
Start with the rock
A placement is good if the rock is sound, the protection sits in a way that resists the direction the load will pull, and you can see that it is well seated. Two or three of those, placed thoughtfully, make a reliable anchor.
No system compensates for a placement in loose rock or a nut in a flare that would pull out under load.
Then the rigging

Practise building the same anchor several times in a row until it is routine, then practise it at a different crag. The skill is judgement about rock, and judgement comes from repetition with feedback.

Check your own anchor twice, from different angles. Have your partner look at it. Keep the system simple enough that you can describe it out loud in one sentence — if you cannot, it is probably too complicated to verify.
