Test it: put the harness on, tighten the belt, then have a partner pull firmly upward on the belay loop as though taking a fall. If the belt slides up toward your ribs, it is too loose, or the harness is the wrong size.

Leg loops should be snug without squeezing. They do not need the same tension as the waist, and over-tightening leg loops restricts movement and is uncomfortable on long routes.

Webbing. Look for cuts, fraying, abrasion, stiff or shiny patches, discolouration, or anything that looks like chemical contamination. Webbing that has lost its flexibility or changed colour should be treated as suspect.

Stitching. The bar tacks and stitching at load-bearing points should be intact. Broken or frayed stitching at a structural point is a retirement issue, not a repair.

Belay loop. This takes constant contact with carabiners, ropes and devices. Normal wear is expected; excessive thinning or fuzzing is not. A worn belay loop means retire the harness — do not substitute a sling through the loop.

Buckles. Check for cracks, corrosion, deformation and correct threading. A buckle that does not lie flat or has been damaged is a problem.

Age. Record the purchase date. Manufacturers publish a service life and a maximum life, and both matter: a harness stored in a garage for ten years is not the same as one used weekly, but it is also not new. Sunlight, chemicals and heavy use all shorten the interval.

Care and storage

Keep harnesses out of prolonged direct sun, away from solvents, acids and exhaust fumes, and never store them wet. Clean with water only, and let them dry fully before storage.

When to replace

Replace on the manufacturer’s service life, or sooner if you find damage to any load-bearing part.

Standards and certification matter when buying: look for a harness tested and marked to a recognised climbing standard, and check the manufacturer’s documentation for its stated lifespan and inspection points. The cost of a new harness is trivially small compared with the consequences of climbing on one you are not sure about.
