Spec sheets are written for buyers who already know what the numbers mean, which is roughly nobody. They answer questions the manufacturer chose, and they leave out the one that matters most: under what conditions was this measured?
None of that makes specs useless. It makes them a vocabulary. Learn a handful of terms and you can tell which claims are comparable and which are decoration.
Denier: a yarn measurement, not a strength rating
Denier describes the thickness of the yarn in a woven fabric. It is a weight-per-length measure: higher denier, thicker yarn. Sixty-denier nylon is a heavier yarn than twenty-denier nylon.
That is genuinely useful information, mostly as a signal of what the fabric was designed for. Lightweight shells and ultralight tent flys often use low-denier yarns to save weight; packs, duffels and abrasive-contact areas use higher denier.
What denier does not tell you is how durable the finished fabric is. Strength also comes from the weave, the ripstop grid if there is one, the coating or lamination, and how the material is reinforced at stress points. A 40-denier fabric with a good weave can outperform a 70-denier fabric with a loose one, and a fabric that is strong in a lab can still fail where it is sewn.
Treat a denier figure as a hint about the design target, not a score.
Hydrostatic head: the number needs its method
Waterproof fabrics are commonly described with a hydrostatic head figure — how much water pressure the fabric resisted before water passed through it, measured in millimetres.
The concept is sound. The problem is comparison. The result depends on the test method used, including the water pressure ramp rate, whether the sample is new or has been washed or flexed, and whether the fabric or a seam was tested.
Two practical consequences:
- Numbers are comparable when the method is the same. If a brand publishes which standard it tested against, you can compare that number with another brand publishing the same one. Without that, you are comparing two different experiments.
- Seams and zips are usually the weak point. A jacket’s fabric can be excellent while its seams let water through. Look for taped or welded seams and water-resistant zips, and treat them as part of the waterproofing, not as details.
A related idea is breathability, which has the same comparability problem. Ordering two jackets by their breathability numbers is only meaningful if the tests match.
R-value: the spec with a real standard behind it
R-value measures thermal resistance. For sleeping pads, it tells you how well the pad stops heat draining into the cold ground — which is why a pad’s R-value matters more than its thickness.
This is the friendliest spec in the outdoor world, because it is quoted against a published test method, ASTM F3340-18. Values are nominally comparable between brands, and they scale in a way you can reason about: more R-value, more insulation against the ground.
Two cautions. First, R-value says nothing about comfort — a pad can be warm and unbearable. Second, it is a property of the pad alone. Your sleeping bag’s warmth does not rescue a cold pad underneath it, because the ground pulls heat out of you continuously.
Sleeping bag temperature ratings: read all three figures
Sleeping bag ratings produced under ISO 23537 come with a set of figures rather than a single number.
- Comfort is the temperature at which an average adult woman can sleep comfortably. It is the conservative figure and the right one to plan around if you sleep cold.
- Limit is the temperature at which an average adult man can sleep in a curled position without waking repeatedly. This is the number most often printed alone on a bag, which is why bags feel less warm than their label suggests.
- Extreme is a survival figure, not a comfort claim, and it is not a temperature you should plan to sleep at.
Ratings also assume a defined base layer and a sleeping pad with meaningful insulation underneath. A great bag on a bare ground sheet will feel far colder than its rating. If a bag does not quote a standard, treat the rating as a marketing figure.
The three questions worth asking
Any spec becomes more useful with three questions attached:
- What was measured? The fabric, the garment, or a component? A pad’s R-value and a fabric’s hydrostatic head describe different things.
- By what method? If a brand names the standard, you can compare. If it does not, the number is a claim, not a datum.
- Under what conditions? Temperature ratings assume a base layer and a pad. Waterproof ratings assume a new, unflexed sample. Real use bends, dirties and ages everything.
Where specs stop being useful
Specs describe materials. They do not describe fit, comfort, repairability, or whether a piece of gear suits the trip you are planning.
A jacket with a modest waterproof rating that fits you well and has pit zips you actually use will keep you drier than a higher-rated jacket that you never vent, because the water inside a shell comes mostly from you. A pad with a lower R-value you find comfortable beats one you cannot sleep on.
Buy for the trips you take, use the specs to rule out the obvious mismatches, and let fit and comfort decide between the survivors.
