Quick Verdict

Buy a double-wall, freestanding tent with two doors, and size it for one more person than you think you need. Three-season tents are built for spring through autumn rain and wind, not snow loading — if you camp in winter, that is a different tent.

Tent shopping is dominated by two numbers — capacity and weight — and neither one tells you how the tent behaves in the third night of rain. The features that decide whether you enjoy a trip are less glamorous: how many doors it has, how much vestibule space there is, and whether the thing ventilates well enough to keep condensation off your sleeping bag.

1. What “three-season” actually means

Three-season means spring, summer, and autumn: rain, wind, and moderate cold. These tents prioritise ventilation and livable space with mesh panels that let humid air out.

It does not mean winter. A winter or four-season tent is built to shed snow load, close up against spindrift, and hold warmth. If you camp in real snow, a three-season tent is the wrong purchase — even a good one.

2. Capacity: the number is a maximum, not a target

Tent capacity is usually defined as the number of people who can lie side by side on sleeping pads, wall to wall, with no room for gear. That is the honest reading.

Two useful rules:

  • Size up for space. Two adults who want to sit up, dress, and keep packs inside should look at a three-person tent. The weight penalty is real but modest, and the comfort difference is large.
  • Size up for weather. On a wet trip you spend more waking hours inside. A tent rated exactly at your party size becomes a wet-weather problem.

One person in a two-person tent is the most comfortable configuration there is, and a very common one.

3. Doors and vestibules: the features people forget

One door or two. Two doors means nobody climbs over anybody at night, and each person gets their own exit. On a multi-day trip this is worth more than several hundred grams. For solo use, one door is fine.

Vestibule size. The vestibule is the covered space outside the inner tent where boots, packs, and wet kit live. A vestibule big enough to cook in (if conditions allow) or to store two packs completely changes a wet trip. Look for a stated vestibule area rather than trusting a photo.

Door orientation. Doors that open to the side keep rain out when you open them. Doors that open upward catch water. On an awning-style door, check whether it can be propped open for ventilation in light rain.

4. Structure: freestanding, semi-freestanding, and trekking-pole

  • Freestanding. Poles form a self-supporting shape; you can pick it up and move it. Easiest to pitch on hard or rocky ground where stakes will not go in. Usually the heaviest.
  • Semi-freestanding. Needs stakes at the foot or head to hold shape. A good middle ground, and very common.
  • Trekking-pole / single-pole. Lightest option by a wide margin, and popular with long-distance hikers who already carry poles. Needs solid stake placements and more pitching skill, especially in wind.

The lightest tent is not the best tent if you cannot pitch it quickly when the weather turns. Practise at home, in wind, before you rely on it.

5. Waterproofing: the numbers and what they miss

Hydrostatic head measures how much water pressure a fabric resists. The higher the number, the more rain and ground water the fabric can hold back before leaking. Floors generally want a higher figure than flysheets, because you put body weight on them.

Coating type matters for longevity. Polyurethane coatings are common and work well; silicone coatings are lighter and very durable over time but can be harder to repair and often require you to seal seams yourself.

Neither number covers the two most common ways a tent gets wet inside:

  1. Condensation. Your breath and body put a lot of water vapour into the air overnight. If the tent cannot vent it out, it condenses on the fly and drips. Ventilation is the cure: mesh panels, a partially open door, and not sealing every vent to stay warm.
  2. Pitching mistakes. A flysheet touching the inner tent transfers water straight through. Guy out the fly so it stands clear, and pitch with the low end into the wind.

6. Floor and durability notes

  • Bathtub floor. The floor material extends up the sides and is seamed above ground level, so water running underneath cannot seep in at the seam. Worth having.
  • Footprint. A groundsheet protects the floor from abrasion and punctures. Some tents require it for warranty coverage, others do not. On rocky ground it more than pays for itself.
  • Pole material. Aluminium poles bend and can often be straightened or splinted in the field. Carbon poles are lighter but fail more abruptly. For trips where a pole failure would end the trip, aluminium is the safer choice.

7. A buying checklist

Before you buy, answer these in order:

  1. How many people, and do you want room for gear inside?
  2. What is the worst weather you expect — rain only, or wind and cold too?
  3. Do you carry trekking poles already? If yes, a trekking-pole tent saves real weight.
  4. How many doors, and is the vestibule big enough for your packs?
  5. How does it ventilate when the fly is fully on?
  6. Can you pitch it alone, in wind, in the dark?

If you can answer those six, the weight and price numbers become much easier to judge.

The short version

Buy a double-wall, freestanding tent, size it for one more person than your party, and insist on two doors and a usable vestibule. Then ignore the weight chart for a moment and check how it vents — because the most common way to get wet inside a tent is condensation, not rain.
