Trekking poles attract more opinion than almost any other piece of hiking kit. Some people call them essential, some call them training wheels for your arms. Both camps are describing something real, and the deciding factor is not experience — it is terrain, load, and how long you plan to be out.

1. What poles actually do on a descent

Walking downhill is where the case is strongest. Every step down, your leading leg absorbs a force larger than your body weight, and the quadriceps absorb most of it eccentrically — the muscle lengthens while it works, which is why your legs shake after a long descent and ache for two days afterwards.

A pole planted ahead of you takes a share of that force through your arm instead. Two things follow. First, the load on the knee drops, and research into joint loading has found the reduction increases as pack weight and downhill gradient increase. Second, you gain a third and fourth contact point, which matters on loose scree, wet roots, and river crossings where one bad step ends the trip.

The benefit is not free. Your arms and shoulders now do work, and on a long descent that fatigue is real. Most people still finish less beaten up with poles than without, but it is a trade, not a bonus.

2. What they do on a climb

On an ascent, poles mostly change rhythm and posture.

Pushing down on a pole lets you engage your arms and upper back, which spreads the effort across more muscle and takes some pressure off your calves. On a sustained climb this often reads as “I can keep going” rather than “I am faster”. The measurable wins are smaller than on descents.

Where poles help most on climbs is stability under load. With a heavy pack, a pole planted uphill of you gives you something to pull against on a big step. On steep, loose ground it prevents the awkward half-step that ends in a stumble.

3. Where poles get in the way

Not every trail rewards them.

  • Scrambling. When you need both hands on rock, poles become something to stow. Sections that alternate between walking and easy scrambling are the most annoying terrain for pole users.
  • Dense brush. Poles snag on everything, and you spend more effort managing them than walking.
  • Flat, smooth paths. On an even rail-trail or a manicured forest path, the load sharing is negligible and you are carrying two poles for no return.
  • Hiking with both hands full. If you are navigating with a map and compass, or carrying a camera you use constantly, poles split your attention.

If your typical hike is flat and short, they will spend most of their life strapped to your pack.

4. Choosing: the four things that matter

Adjustability. Fixed-length poles are lighter and stiffer, but you can only use them at one height, and they do not pack down for travel. Adjustable poles cost a little more and cover climbing, descending, and stowing on a pack. For a first pair, buy adjustable.

Locking mechanism. Flip locks are fast and can be adjusted with gloves on. Twist locks are lower profile and cannot be knocked open, but they seize with grit and are awkward in the cold. Flip locks are the safer default in wet, sandy conditions.

Grip material. Cork absorbs sweat and stays comfortable in heat; foam is lighter and better in cold; rubber is durable but gets slippery when your hands sweat. Try them in a shop — grip preference is genuinely personal.

Packability. Three-section poles fold to roughly 60–65 cm; five-section folding poles get to about 35–40 cm and fit inside a daypack. If you fly with hand luggage or attach poles to a small pack, folded length decides whether you can bring them at all.

5. Setting them up

Set the length so that with the tip on the ground your elbow sits at about a right angle. Then adjust for terrain:

  • Climbing: shorten 5–10 cm so you can push down and back without reaching.
  • Descending: lengthen slightly so you can plant the pole ahead without hunching.
  • Traversing a slope: shorten the uphill pole, lengthen the downhill one.

Use the wrist straps properly — hand up through the loop from below, so the strap takes load on the push. Most people who find poles tiring are gripping the handle hard instead of letting the strap carry the force.

6. Care and repair

Poles fail in two ways: locks slip, and tips wear through.

  • Clean and dry the pole sections after wet trips, especially if you walked through sand. Grit is what kills twist locks.
  • Check the tip. Once the carbide is gone, the pole skids on rock. Tips are cheap and usually replaceable.
  • If a section is stuck, twist rather than pull, and warm the joint with your hands. Forcing it separates the inner lock from the tube.

Poles are worth carrying when you have a load, a long descent, or unstable ground. They are worth leaving at home when the trail is flat, the terrain needs your hands, or the trip is short. Are carbon poles worth the extra cost?

Carbon is lighter and damps vibration better, but it can shatter rather than bend under a hard sideways load. Aluminium bends, and can often be straightened enough to finish a trip. If you are hard on gear or use poles in rock, aluminium is the more forgiving choice.
