Disc brakes

A rotor on the hub, pads in a caliper, and stopping power that barely changes when it rains. That consistency in the wet is the reason they have become standard on anything ridden in traffic or on trails.

They need a little more attention: rotors can bend, pads can become contaminated by oil or spray, and hydraulic systems occasionally need bleeding. None of it is difficult, and all of it is worth learning.

Rim brakes

Lighter, cheaper, easier to adjust at the roadside, and completely adequate in the dry. Their weakness is wet weather, where braking distance lengthens noticeably until the rim has dried.

If you ride a rim-braked bike in the rain, brake slightly earlier and gently for a moment to clear the water before you need real stopping power.

Pad wear and replacement

Rim pads carry a wear indicator; when it disappears, replace them, and replace both sides at once. Check that the pad contacts the rim, not the tyre — a pad touching the tyre will destroy the sidewall.

Disc pads are done when the friction material is down to around a millimetre, or when braking feels grabby with material left. Replace pads in pairs, and bed them in by braking firmly a few times from moderate speed in a safe place.

Checks that keep braking predictable

  • Cables and housing, for stretch and corrosion, if you run mechanical brakes.
  • Fluid and lever feel, if you run hydraulic, watching for a spongy lever.
  • Rotor alignment, listening for rub after a wheel change.
  • Rim wear, on rim-braked bikes, since a worn rim wall fails suddenly.

Do these at the same time as cleaning the chain. Brakes are the one system where a small problem becomes a large one immediately.

Are disc brakes worth it for a road or commuting bike?

For commuting in traffic and in the wet, the consistency is worth it — braking does not change when the rim is wet. For dry-weather riding on a light bike, good rim brakes remain entirely adequate.

How do I know when pads are worn?

Rim brake pads have a wear line; once it is gone, replace them. Disc pads are worn when the friction material is thinner than about a millimetre, or when braking has started to feel grabby or noisy with plenty of material left.

Why do my brakes squeal?

Usually contamination or glazing. Disc pads and rotors want cleaning with a dedicated brake cleaner rather than oil-based products, and pads that have absorbed oil are safer replaced than cleaned.
