Blisters feel like bad luck. They are almost always arithmetic: friction, moisture, heat and time, multiplied by a fit problem that was there from the first step.
That is good news, because three of those four variables are things you can change.
What actually damages the skin
Walking shears your skin against the inside of your sock and shoe. Repeated shearing separates the layers of the skin, fluid collects in the gap, and you have a blister.
Moisture makes skin softer and more vulnerable, and heat increases friction and keeps the skin damp. So the worst conditions are a hot day, a long descent, damp feet and a shoe that lets your foot slide.
Note what is not on that list: the brand of your socks. Fit and moisture management are the levers that matter.
Fit first
Before any tape or powder, check the fit.
- Length. Your longest toe should have room in front — roughly a thumb’s width when standing. On descents your foot slides forward, and a shoe that fits perfectly on the flat can jam your toes on the way down.
- Width. A shoe that squeezes the forefoot creates pressure points that no sock can fix.
- Heel hold. If your heel lifts with every step, that movement is friction, and it will produce a blister at the back of the heel. Lacing changes sometimes solve this, but a shoe that is simply the wrong shape will not.
- Break-in. Stiff new boots and a long first hike are a classic combination. Wear new footwear on shorter trips first.
Keep feet dry
Moisture is the accelerant. Manage it deliberately:
- Choose socks that move moisture and dry quickly — wool or synthetic, not cotton.
- Carry a spare pair and change at a stop if your feet are soaked. This is one of the highest-value weight items in a daypack.
- Air your feet at breaks. Even five minutes with the boots off helps.
- In genuinely wet conditions, accept that waterproofing will not keep feet dry over a full day, and manage as though your feet will be wet: change socks, dry what you can, protect vulnerable spots in advance.
Deal with hot spots immediately
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides the day.
A hot spot is the warning stage — skin that is irritated but intact. Stop at that moment. Even a short delay lets the damage complete itself.
At the stop: take the boot and sock off, dry the foot, check whether there is grit in the boot or a fold in the sock, then cover the spot. A dressing designed for blisters works well; a piece of smooth tape can hold a spot that has not broken the skin. Smooth it down so it does not roll, and sort out whatever was causing the pressure before you walk on.
For a blister that has already formed and broken, keep it clean and covered and monitor it. Signs of infection — spreading redness, swelling, pus, increasing pain — are a reason to end the trip and get medical advice, not to tape over it.
Build the habit
The routine that prevents most blisters: footwear that fits and has been worn before, socks that are dry and the right material, a stop at the first hot spot, and a spare pair of socks in the pack.
None of it is expensive or clever. It just has to happen at the moment when walking still feels fine, which is exactly when it is easiest to skip.
