The practical conclusion: the phone can always tell you where you are. You have to make sure it can tell you what is around you.

2. Downloading maps properly

Whatever app you use, the workflow is the same:

  1. Draw the area, not the line. Download a box that covers your route plus a buffer either side — at least a few kilometres. People get lost off-route; a downloaded corridor is useless the moment you step outside it.
  2. Include the whole trip plus the exit routes. If your plan is a loop, download the bail-out valleys too. The route you take when something goes wrong is rarely the one you planned.
  3. Check the download. Put the phone in airplane mode at home and pan around the downloaded area. If the map goes blank when you scroll, the tiles are not actually stored.
  4. Download elevation contours and trail overlays if your app offers them. Contours are what let you reason about where a route goes when the path is not obvious on the ground.
  5. Refresh before every trip. Downloads expire or get cleared when storage runs low.

3. Battery: the real constraint

A navigation app with the screen on will flatten most phones in a few hours. On a full day out that is a genuine safety problem, because the phone is also your light and your emergency call.

  • Put the phone in airplane mode. In weak-signal areas the radio spends the day hunting for a tower, which can cost more than the navigation itself. Airplane mode stops that.
  • Navigate in bursts. Check position, put the phone away, walk. Continuous turn-by-turn tracking is for roads, not trails.
  • Turn the screen brightness down. On most phones the display is the largest single draw.
  • Carry a power bank sized for two full charges, and a short cable you have tested.
  • Keep the phone warm. Cold weather cuts battery capacity sharply. An inside pocket beats an outer one.
  • Write down key bearings or grid references before you start. Notes on paper survive a dead battery.

4. The paper backup

A paper map and a baseplate compass cost very little, weigh almost nothing and never run out of power. They are not nostalgia — they are the layer that survives a cracked screen, a dead battery, and a soaked phone.

Three skills are enough to get most people out of trouble:

  • Setting the map. Rotate it so it matches the ground, using the compass. Most navigation errors start with a map oriented 180 degrees out.
  • Taking a bearing. Point the compass at a landmark, read the number, and use it to relocate yourself on the map.
  • Pacing and timing. Knowing your pace over 100 metres lets you estimate distance walked when visibility is poor.

Practise all three somewhere familiar. Learning to take a bearing while cold and worried is much harder than learning it in a car park.

5. Tell someone your plan

The most effective safety measure is not a device. It is a person who knows where you went and when you should be back.

Leave a written plan with someone reliable:

  • Where you are starting and the exact trailhead.
  • The route, with named landmarks and any bail-out options.
  • Your expected finish time, plus a margin.
  • What vehicle you are in and where it is parked.
  • When they should raise the alarm, and who to call.

If your plans change on the day, tell them. A rescue that starts from the wrong trailhead wastes the hours that matter most.

6. A navigation kit that fits in a pocket

  • Phone with offline maps downloaded and tested, in airplane mode on the trail.
  • Power bank and cable.
  • Paper map of the area, in a plastic sleeve.
  • Baseplate compass.
  • Written route notes and grid references.
  • Headlamp or torch, even on a day hike. Being benighted is far more common than being lost.
  • Whistle. Three blasts is the international distress signal and it carries much further than your voice.

Your phone already knows where you are without a tower. What it cannot do is invent a map. Download the tiles for your route and a wide margin around it, test them in airplane mode, keep the phone out of signal-hunting mode, and carry paper as the backup.
