For most hikers a squeeze filter is the best default: fast, no waiting, no taste, and it takes out the sediment that makes water unpleasant. Chemical tablets are the better backup because they are tiny and never clog. UV works quickly on clear water but needs charged batteries and clear water to work at all.

Filters

A hollow-fibre squeeze filter is the default for a reason. It works in seconds, it removes sediment and the taste of the creek along with the risk, and there is nothing to wait for. The trade-offs are mechanical: they clog, they can freeze, and they need backflushing to keep flowing.

Choose by threads and compatibility first. A filter that screws onto the bottles and bladders you already carry is worth more than one with better lab numbers and the wrong thread.

Chemical tablets

Tablets win on weight, cost, and reliability. A strip of them lives in a pocket and works after the filter has died. They need time — commonly half an hour, longer in cold or cloudy water — and they leave a faint taste some people dislike.

The practical use is as a second method, not a first. Treat a bottle while you walk and drink it later; use the filter for water you want now.

UV

UV pens are fast and leave no taste, and they are excellent on clear water for one or two people. They need charged batteries, and they need water that light can pass through — silty or tannin-stained water shields the organisms you are trying to kill. On a well-used trail with clear sources, a pleasure. As the only method on a silty river, a liability.

Two habits that matter more than the choice

Clean your hands before handling the clean side of any system. And keep the dirty bottle and the clean bottle visually different — a good share of stomach trouble on trail comes from mixing the two up, not from the water.

Does a filter remove viruses?

Most hollow-fibre filters are rated for bacteria and protozoa but not viruses. Virus risk in North American backcountry water is low; where it is not, add tablets or choose a purifier rated for viruses.

Can I drink straight from a fast stream?

Fast and cold looks clean and proves nothing. The things that make people sick come from upstream — animals, other people, runoff — and are invisible at any speed.

How do I keep a filter from freezing?

Sleep with it. A hollow-fibre filter that freezes can crack internally and quietly stop working, and you will not notice until you are relying on it.
