On technical ground, pick two or three foot placements in advance and commit to them.
Arms and balance
Keep your arms out and active rather than pinned to your sides. Poles help considerably on long descents when your legs are already tired, and they add a third contact point on loose ground.
Bend your knees more than feels natural, and stay slightly lower than you would on the flat — a lower centre of gravity recovers faster from a stumble.
When to brake, when to let go
Braking is appropriate on a corner, on a blind section, and anywhere you cannot see the landing. On open, visible, runnable ground, letting the hill carry you costs far less energy than resisting it.
The judgement comes from reading terrain, and reading terrain comes from practice on ground where a mistake is cheap.
Training descents properly
Do descending repeats as a session: a hill you know, several repeats, full concentration on cadence and foot placement. That builds eccentric strength, which is what descents actually demand. Then let a hard downhill day be followed by an easy one — the damage shows up two days later, not on the day.
