Heel drop: where your foot lands
Drop is the height difference between the heel and the forefoot.
- 0–4 mm (low drop): encourages a midfoot or forefoot strike, gives more ground feel, loads the calf and Achilles more.
- 4–8 mm (mid drop): the broad middle ground; what most trail shoes are built around.
- 8 mm and up (high drop): shifts load toward the heel and quads, easier on calves, less ground feel.
The important point is not which is better but how fast you change. If you have run in 10 mm drop shoes for years, moving straight to a 0 mm pair puts an unfamiliar load on your calves and Achilles. Change drop by a few millimetres at a time and let adaptation happen.
Lugs: what the tread is for
Lug depth is decided by your terrain, not your ambitions.

Spacing matters as much as depth. Widely spaced lugs clear mud; tightly packed ones hold it. Sticky rubber compounds grip wet rock but wear quickly on abrasive ground — another tradeoff with no free option.
Stack height and rock plates
Stack height is how much foam sits between you and the ground. More foam means more cushioning and more protection, but less ground feel and, past a point, less stability on off-camber ground.
A rock plate is a stiff layer inside the midsole that spreads the load of a sharp object so one stone cannot hit one point on your sole. It is worth it on scree and talus. Elsewhere it reduces flexibility and adds weight for protection you will not use.
Upper, fit, and the details that end runs
- Toe cap: protection against stubbed rocks; a real one is stiff and wraps the front of the foot.
- Heel counter and heel lock: downhill running pushes your foot forward, so a secure heel matters more than a cushioned one.
- Gaiters: for sand, snow, and scree. For anything else the ankle collar should do the job.
- Drainage: mesh that lets water out matters more than a waterproof membrane that keeps water in. Non-waterproof trail shoes dry during a run; waterproof ones stay wet.
Fit check: your toes should not touch the front when your foot is loaded, and the shoe should not roll off your foot on a hard side cut. Trail shoes are usually worn a half size up from road shoes for exactly this reason.

Two pairs cover most runners:
- A daily trail shoe — 6–8 mm drop, 3.5–4.5 mm lugs, moderate stack. The one you reach for without thinking.
- A conditions shoe — either deeper lugs for mud and winter, or lower drop and a plate for technical rock.
Two pairs also last longer than replacing one pair twice as often, because the midsole gets a day off between runs.
