Buy for fit first and capacity second. A vest that moves with you at your running pace is worth more than one with more space, and most runners need less water than they carry. Test any vest loaded, at pace, before the day it matters.
A hydration vest is the piece of running gear most often bought on capacity and regretted on fit. The volume printed on the label tells you very little about whether the vest will be comfortable at hour four.
Fit is the whole product. Capacity is a secondary decision.
Work out what you actually need
Most runners carry more water than they drink. The exception is genuinely hot, exposed terrain with no refill for hours.
A practical way to size it: weigh yourself before and after a run of a couple of hours, drinking normally, and see how much body mass you lost. That gives you a rough figure for your sweat rate in those conditions. Then carry enough for that plus a margin, and plan refills.
Three shapes of trip:
- Short runs with access to water. Small vest, one or two soft flasks, nothing more.
- Half-day in moderate conditions. Front bottles plus a modest back volume for a layer and food.
- Long, unsupported days. Bladder or extra bottles, and a plan for where refills exist and whether the water needs treating.
Water is heavy — a litre is a kilogram. Carrying a litre you will not drink costs you more than most gear upgrades save.
Bottles, bladders and both
Front bottles are easy to reach without stopping, let you see how much is left, and are simple to refill at a stream or tap. They sit where you can monitor them.
A bladder carries more and lets you drink continuously, which is a genuine advantage on long climbs. Its weaknesses are that you cannot see the level, refilling means unpacking the vest, and the tube can be awkward to clean.
Many experienced runners carry both: bottles for the water they are actively drinking, and a bladder for long sections without refills.
Fit: the part that decides everything
A vest has to sit still while your torso moves, and that is a geometry problem, not a strap-tension problem.
- Chest and ribcage. The vest should be snug around the upper torso when the straps are barely tightened. If you have to crank the straps to stop it moving, the size or the shape is wrong.
- Shoulder straps. They should spread load across the chest rather than cut into the neck or sit on the collarbone.
- Torso length. Vests are sized partly by torso length. A vest that is too long sits low and bounces; too short and it rides up.
- Ladies’ fit. Chest shape changes where a vest can sit. Test the specific model rather than assuming a unisex size will work.
- Load the pockets. Fit changes when the pockets are full. Always try a vest loaded.
Loading it so it does not bounce
- Weight at the front and centred, close to your body. Heavy items high on the back or swinging at the sides cause movement.
- Squeeze air out of soft flasks after filling — the sloshing you hear is mostly air moving.
- Pack in layers: water and food in the accessible pockets, layer and emergency kit in the back.
- Tighten progressively. Load it, then adjust, then jog to check.
- Keep the compression cords snug when the vest is not full. An empty back compartment on a loosely-corded vest is a bouncing bag.
What deserves pocket space
Beyond water, the things worth carrying on a trail run: a light shell, a phone in a waterproof sleeve, a small first-aid kit, emergency food, and a way to navigate that works without signal. Some races specify mandatory kit — check the list rather than assuming.
Test everything on a short run first. A vest that is comfortable for twenty minutes in the shop can be a different experience at hour three, and that is the hour that matters.
